The 2019 Silwerskermfees is in full swing, and day one seriously brought the heat – literally and figuratively!
Camps Bay shone in perfect Springtime weather yesterday as the festival kicked off, and we could not have asked for a better first day to this illustrious festival.
Here is a look at some of what went down on day one at Silwerskermfees 2019:
With the opening day of the festival running so smoothly, we caught up with Village n Life’s Group Host Manager, Clayton Howard, to ask him what goes into running a smooth festival such as this from The Bay Hotel’s perspective.
What does is mean for The Bay Hotel to be the venue of choice for Silwerskermfees for so many years and how does the staff feel during this time and how does everyone pull together as a team?
“The partnership between The Bay Hotel and Silwerskermfees is a very special one that we cherish deeply. Every year when this event rolls around, our team is motivated and it adds to the overall growth of the team, believe it or not!
It’s also special to see that it is not only our team that gets excited, but the regulars and hotel guests that come to this event year after year. The regulars will even hug and kiss the team when saying hello – greeting them like old friends they haven’t seen in a while. It’s almost like your friendship is just instantly re-kindled.
Look, what I can say is that the team is already tired, but the fun we have and the feeling of success gives all the added energy we need!”.

Day three and four offered us yet another gorgeous, almost-Spring days, and, because it also signalled the start of the weekend, The Bay Hotel was buzzing with people. The atmosphere of excitement was almost tangible, and everyone seemed to fully enjoy the festival – even the staff members who have been doing a stellar job.
We also managed to catch up with one of the legends of The Bay Hotel, Caamil, and asked him what his experience is when it’s Silwerskerm time.
“It’s buzzing! This time of year is one of our busiest, and everyone seems to be in a good mood. My bar [Caamil’s] is always busy – as soon as the clock hits five o’clock, people start to arrive here and order sundowners. I enjoy it, because I get to chat a whole lot of different people, but sometimes I only end up leaving my bar in the early hours of the morning! At Silwerskerm, people like to party [sic],”
Naturally, Saturday night was the highlight of the festival, with this year’s winners being announced in the Rotunda. You can check out a list of all the winners here.
