“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened” – Anatole France

We couldn’t agree more! Pets are more than just companions – they’re family. And what better way to celebrate World Animal Day than by taking your furry friend out for a treat this weekend!

Pet friendly accommodation and restaurants, bars and coffee shops have been on the rise as of late, especially in Cape Town. Just taking a stroll along the Sea Point promenade, or a walk down Kloof Street, and you’ll see numerous restaurants and coffee shops littered with people enjoying a cup of coffee with their furbaby at their side.

The hospitality industry seems to know that when humans can hang out with their pets, they are inherently more happy!

We’ve put together a list of all the best places you can hang out with your four legged friend this weekend in the Mother City.

Restaurants

As we’ve mentioned, there are dozens of pet friendly restaurants in Cape Town; some of which even cater specifically for animals, giving them a bowl of water and some snacks upon arrival!

Some of our favourite pet friendly restaurants include:

Cafè Paradiso – Kloof Street

This beautiful restaurant will be an absolute treat for your furbaby. They can soak up the sun on the patio while you enjoy a leisurely lunch with friends.

Deer Park Cafè – Vredehoek

Bordering the luscious and beautifully maintained Rocklands Road Park, Deer Park Cafè has long since been a favourite for local animal lovers. You can enjoy a meal or a cup of coffee, while your four legged friend can enjoy the luscious lawns of the adjacent park.

Dunes – Hout Bay

A famous landmark in the quaint seaside village of Hout Bay, you’ll often find dogs at Dunes restaurant in Hout Bay. Enjoy a sundowner overlooking the ocean as your dog enjoys the sandy environment of the restaurant.

What’s more, Dunes is located opposite the dog friendly beach in Hout Bay, so after a run on the beach, you can both cool off in the shade at Dunes.

Winchester Mansions – Sea Point

Winchester Mansions is the perfect place to sip on a glass of bubbly with friends – but did you know they’re pet friendly, too? Next time you schedule a lunch date with the girls, you can take your real best friend along, too!

There’s probably nothing that dogs like more than running around on the beach – that, and snacks of course!

There are several dog friendly beaches in and around Cape Town, but some of our favourite beaches include:

Clifton 1st

The most secluded of the Clifton beaches, the beautiful surroundings of Clifton 1st will be a treat for both you and your dog!

Beta Beach – Bakoven

Many locals know of this hidden gem of a beach, which is why it’s proved to be so popular as of late.

The tiny beach is great for swimming or splashing around in the shallow waters, and if your dog is into swimming, too, they’ll love it just as much.

Long Beach – Kommetjie

A surfer’s paradise, you’ll often see four legged friends accompanying their surfer owners to Long Beach in Kommetjie. The beautiful beach is sprawled along a long stretch of the Atlantic, which makes it the perfect place for your dog to run to their heart’s content!

If the beach is not you or your furbaby’s thing, then perhaps a stroll through one of the Mother City’s many parks is a better option.

There are numerous parks – big and small – in Cape Town, and almost all of them are dog friendly. We’d recommend you check out these:

De Waal Park – Gardens

You’ll seldom drive past De Waal and not see any dogs at play there! This park is an absolute treasure for both animals and animal lovers.

It’s safe and clean and offers long stretches of lush lawns for dogs to play until they tire!

Green Point Urban Park – Green Point

Probably the most beautiful park in the whole of Cape Town, the Green Point Urban Park is a serene space for man and man’s best friend.

While dogs are only allowed on leashes in this park, it’s still the perfect place to take your furry friend for a leisurely stroll, while you take in the natural beauty that surrounds you.

The Company’s Garden

Cape Town’s most famous park is also pet friendly! The beautiful, historically rich park is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon with your beloved best friend.

The quaint restaurant in the park is also pet friendly, so you can both chill and have a refreshment after taking a stroll through the park.

There truly are so many places to take your furbaby in and around Cape Town! If you’re looking for something specific, we suggest you download the Doggy Do app (available on both the App Store and Google Play) for more options on what to do and where to take your four legged friend.

The app curates great pet friendly activities, restaurants and accommodation.

Of course, the best place to find pet friendly accommodation is Pet Places. With properties from Camps Bay to Langebaan and Hermanus to Knysna, you can take your furbaby on a roadtrip if you like!
